The Brazilian Under-23 Championship is yielding results sooner than many might have expected. After a strong performance in the competition's debut against Fluminense, Saba, who played as a left back but can also play in midfield, was included in the squad by coach Silas and will travel to Porto Alegre this Tuesday (21.09).
Not even Saba himself was optimistic enough to believe that, for the first time in his career, he was selected for a Flamengo first-team match. He revealed that he looked at the list of players traveling to the match against Grêmio more than once, hoping it would sink in.
"I was taken by surprise. It was an unforgettable feeling. I was speechless. I work every day to see my name there, and until today, I had never seen it. When I arrived, I couldn't believe it. I looked at it about four times until I was sure. Even Pet played with me. I was really happy," he said.
The player believes that his good performance against Flu, in the opening classic of the Brasileirão U-23, was a great opportunity to show his worth to the coach and the technical staff, and now he hopes to continue his work to continue being used in the main team.
"I didn't think the impact of this championship would be this quick. We won Fla x Flu, we played a good game and now I'll have the opportunity to travel with the top team," said the number 46, who hopes to be able to help the team either as a full-back or as a midfielder.
"Regardless of the position, the important thing is to be there. Having this opportunity is already very good, and if I'm going to get in, I'll try to grab it in the best way possible to make the most of it," he added.
Vitor Rodrigues Saba, 20, arrived at Flamengo in early 2007 to join the club's youth squad. Prior to that, he had played for rival Vasco da Gama's youth academy since 2001. With the club, he won the Copa Internacional Circuito das Águas and the Campeonato Carioca Juvenil in 2007. It's worth noting that in 2010, Saba played a friendly against Brasília FC in the Brazilian capital.
