Ronaldinho, Bottinelli, Renato, Vander, Deivid, Wanderley, and the expectation of other signings. Flamengo is building a strong lineup of options for its attack in 2011. With so many quality players to field, coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo will need to be creative and bold. But he's not worried about that, assuring: "There's room for everyone."
Having a well-rounded squad is the first step to a successful season, according to the coach, who is one of the most successful in Brazilian football. Since arriving at the club, Luxa has always emphasized that Flamengo must play offensively. And that's how the team should play in 2011, inspired even by the 1970 Brazilian national team.
"I think one of the things a coach has to do is analyze his players and take advantage of their talents. Zagallo in '70 managed to get everyone on the field. People often think of the Netherlands in '74, the Clockwork Orange, but we have to give Zagallo credit, as he was the one who started this. He put in a center forward who wasn't a center forward and found space for many stars together. You can find solutions; it just depends on the coach," he explained.
Ronaldinho's versatility, officially announced by Flamengo on Monday night (10.01), is an asset for Luxa. The Flamengo manager believes he can use the player in at least two positions.
"I know Ronaldinho very well. I took him, Alex, and Athirson, if I'm not mistaken, from the pre-Olympic team to a Copa América, and he scored a wonderful goal, exploded, and showed his ability. He can play as a midfielder or more from behind. But it's no use thinking only about him; you have to consider the entire squad when putting together the team," he added.
Flamengo continues its preseason in Londrina, in northern Paraná. The team trains full-time throughout the week and faces América-MG on Sunday (16.01), before returning to Rio next Monday (17.01).
