Flamengo still has a chance of making it to next year's Copa Sudamericana. Coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is considering this possibility, but he's already pleased that the team has already achieved its main objective in the 2010 Brasileirão: remaining in Série A. The Flamengo manager knows that Flamengo is used to fighting for places near the top, but he prefers to forget the bad times and already look ahead to 2011.
Luxa explains that he talked extensively with the players, telling them that the team's goal this year was to avoid getting close to the bottom four. According to him, if a spot in the South American Cup comes, it will be a reward for their effort, but if it doesn't, it can't interfere with the team's planning for next season.
"We talked several times in the training camp, reminding ourselves that this year the victory would be different. The players understand. They're used to being at the top of the table, but we managed to overcome this difficult period and focus on next season. Flamengo's greatest achievement was staying in the First Division. Now I'm starting to make some decisions, looking ahead to next season. We have the possibility of the South American Cup, but Flamengo's greatest achievement was staying in the First Division. If the South American Cup happens, great. If it doesn't, we're starting to take action," he said.
Although he's already starting to speak openly about 2011, Luxemburgo doesn't reveal which positions will be recruited for reinforcements or which players are no longer in the plans. According to him, this all needs to be handled internally and only announced at the right time.
"I'm working, observing. You know what Flamengo needs, but this discussion is internal. Flamengo needs to build a squad, but the situations will be discussed internally. You (the press) will be following what's happening. I have a week's vacation. We have to rebuild the next season. There are hiring meetings, planning meetings, this, that. On Monday I'll have a beer, Tuesday there's a meeting. And so on. (The restructuring) will be done calmly, peacefully. We will build the squad for next season calmly. Some leave, others arrive. It's normal, it's a process of change," he concluded.
Before thinking about 2011, however, Flamengo still needs to finish the 2010 season. On Sunday (05.12), the team faces Santos, at 17 pm, at Vila Belmiro. A victory could take the team to the 2011 South American.
