If Zico gave Brazil, America, and the world to Flamengo with the ball at his feet, this Tuesday (June 01.06), the Galinho returned to Gávea after 20 years, with new missions and a new role. Instead of cleats, shoes. Instead of shorts and a t-shirt, a suit. And the greatest idol in the history of the Rubro-Negro is now also the executive director of football in the administration of president Patricia Amorim. A victory for Patricia, for Zico, and, first and foremost, for Flamengo.
It's with this mindset—of uniting the club's roots and leaving a great legacy for the future—that Zico arrives at Gávea. Prioritizing the completion of the Training Center, paying special attention to the youth teams, and, of course, seeking to maintain Flamengo's winning tradition, Zico arrives at the club to usher in a new era in football.
"If you build a chain and two links break, everything goes down the drain. We have to be united, and those of us here need to know that. We only wear one shirt. We only win one victory. With this mindset, everyone wins, everyone leaves happy, and the club even happier. I came with an open heart to face this challenge. I feel prepared, and Flamengo is bigger than all of us," he stated.
The Galinho dreams of making the club a benchmark and is already setting deadlines to make that happen. The new executive director will be based at Ninho do Urubu and hopes that by January 2011, the club will have a training center worthy of Flamengo's grandeur. Zico, who received a jersey from president Patricia Amorim, donned the Sacred Mantle and reaffirmed his love for the club.
"I want to develop this work to leave a great legacy for Flamengo. To make us ever more proud of our club. When I was still playing, I made a point of purchasing my membership precisely to maintain the connection I've always had. I followed my path after 20 years dedicated to Flamengo. I traveled extensively around the world, experiencing different cultures and ways of working in football, and when I returned to Brazil, the only place I could work was Flamengo. Something incredibly hard fell on my shoulders: losing a World Cup with the national team, but facing Flamengo would be even harder," he revealed.
Proud of the signing, the president believes this is a unique moment in the club's history and should be celebrated.
"It is with great honor that we present the greatest idol in the history of football and anchor of this club, Arthur Antunes Coimbra, our Zico, as executive director of football. It is a historic, unique moment, and we are convinced that today Flamengo writes another important chapter in its history, to definitively restore the indispensable and necessary unity to once again live up to its tradition. Zico represents this intention to bring Flamengo back to the place from which it has been unable to leave," he added.
