In Flamengo's final training session before the decisive match against Corinthians in the Copa Libertadores Round of 16, coach Rogério Lourenço opted to focus intensively on set pieces. With Michael taking free kicks from the right wing, he tested both attacking and defensive plays from aerial balls. This part of the training session was not allowed for filming by the press.
This type of play will be a major focus in Wednesday's match (April 28.04). The coach believes that in modern football, it's important to be efficient in aerial plays, both defensively and offensively.
"Training aerial balls is very important in a match, especially in the football we play today. I don't know exactly, but I believe that about 50% of the goals scored today come from plays like this. It was important to carry out this training today and prevent the press from recording the work. There are no secrets in football, but we can suddenly make a difference in a game with a surprise, both with balls for and against," said Rogério.
Responsible for taking free kicks and corners, midfielder Michael believes this type of activity is important, especially in a decisive match. After all, the match against Corinthians will be tight, and a set piece could ultimately decide the outcome.
"It's going to be a very balanced game, without a doubt. And like every decision, it will be decided in the details. It's a huge responsibility to be responsible for these decisions, and I hope to live up to the challenge," he said.
After the tactical exercises, assistant referee Marcelo Salles officiated the traditional pre-match recreational session. The Reds, comprised of David, Adriano, Vagner Love, and company, prevailed. With goals from the defender, Imperador, Petkovic, Camacho, and Welinton, the team thrashed the Grays, comprised of De Juan, Vinícius Pacheco, and Bruno, 5-2. The goalkeeper and Toró scored, and with the result, each team has ten wins in the Reds and Blacks' domestic championship.
