Beating Palmeiras away from home is no easy task, especially with seven players missing. But Flamengo went to Pacaembu and, with grit, defeated the Alviverde 1-0, with a goal from Vagner Love late in the second half. Happy with the team's performance, especially in the second half, coach Rogério Lourenço celebrated the victory and the three points earned away from home.
In five league games, Flamengo had won one, lost one, and drawn three. Just when everything seemed headed for another draw, Flamengo pulled off a heroic victory, earning applause from the coach.
"First of all, the result was worth it. An away win against a team as good as Palmeiras is always important. We had played well against Grêmio and Vitória, but we hadn't won. The team improved in the second half. In the first half, we were a bit disorganized, but we got it right at halftime. We controlled the game and believed until the end that we could score. The important thing now is to get points and finish these seven rounds in a good position in the table," he analyzed.
Despite the good result, Rogério recognizes that the team did not play a great game and credits this, in large part, to the fact that they did not have a large part of their squad available in the duel.
"We know it wasn't a great game, but it's worth remembering that we didn't have seven players. That makes things difficult. No matter how qualified the team is, it's difficult. We also have to work hard on the emotional side, so that the players who come in have confidence," he said.
Regarding the high rate of misplaced passes, the coach expressed concern, but assured that he will work on the fundamentals exhaustively in the off-season during the World Cup.
"These misplaced passes are due to several factors. One is the constant lineup changes. There were six games and six different teams. During the match, we also have to change the formation, and that makes things more complicated. And, of course, there's the anxiety of winning. The team needed a positive result, and that always ends up creating some nervousness. But we're paying attention, and we'll work on this during the offseason," he concluded.
Flamengo returns to Rio this Thursday (03.06) to begin preparations for Saturday's match against Goiás, at Maracanã.
