Coach explains unusual incident with Corrêa

A communication problem caused confusion on the edge of the Maracanã pitch on Wednesday night.

Colombian Borja was already warming up to come on in place of Kleberson when Flamengo coach Rogério Lourenço was informed by defender Juan that midfielder Correa had requested a substitution. Rogério then asked Borja to wait a moment and called Rômulo to come on in the number 7's place. But when the fourth official held up the board with the substitution numbers, Correa announced he would not come off, sparking a controversy that was quickly defused by the coach in the post-match press conference.

The Flamengo manager explained that there was no lack of discipline on Correa's part, but rather a minor communication error. Interestingly, the confusion occurred during the stoppage for the free kick that led to Avaí's goal.

"There was a miscommunication there. Juan told me that Correa wanted to come off. When Correa saw that he was going to be substituted, he said no, because he was just asking to wait a bit. And the goal ended up coming at that moment. But it's nothing that will bother us. It doesn't affect the flow of the match and my way of thinking," said Rogério, who also explained why he considered holding off on bringing on Borja, in case Correa was really going to come off at that moment.

"At the moment, Borja was ready to come on. If I make a substitution there, with Rômulo and Correa, I would have to wait to see the other players, like Pet. I want to leave Correa and Pet on the field so they can develop physically," he added.

This Thursday, Borja, Rômulo, and players who didn't start against Avaí, along with those not included in the squad, will play a training match against Artsul at 15 p.m. in Gávea. The starters for Wednesday's match are expected to complete recovery exercises.
