Flamengo will face two Chilean opponents in its Copa Santander Libertadores group. In addition to Universidad de Chile, the team determined in the draw held by CONMEBOL in December, another Santiago club will be Flamengo's rival in its quest for a second championship: Universidad Católica (UC).
Chilean side Católica secured their place in group 8, the same as Flamengo, by eliminating Argentine team Colón at home on Tuesday night.
Fans at the San Carlos de Apoquindo stadium witnessed a thrilling match. UC had lost the first leg in Santa Fe 3-2 and needed a 1-0 win. The Chileans found the first goal in the 40th minute of the first half, scored by Henriquez. In the second half, Colón chased the result and quickly turned the game around with goals in the 8th and 11th minutes of the second half, the first by Fabianesi and the second by striker Fuertes. The Chileans seemed finished—they needed two goals to take the match to penalties. But the sending off of Colón's Candia in the 24th minute made things easier. UC turned the game around with Toloza in the 30th minute and Morales in the 38th.
The result forced the decision to the penalty spot. The refereeing favored UC, who failed to flag goalkeeper Garcé for an offside position on the penalty he saved. The Chileans converted all five shots and are now preparing their ticket to Rio de Janeiro. The match against Flamengo will be on February 24th at 21:50 pm at the Maracanã stadium.
