The last time Flamengo faced Bangu, their opponent in this third round of the Guanabara Cup, it wasn't easy. The winning goal came late, with a header from Ronaldo Angelim. The match took place at Raulino de Oliveira Stadium in Volta Redonda in January 2009.

Flamengo, who dominated possession for most of the half, created little in the first half, and Bangu had the best chances. The stalemate was alleviated in the 38th minute, when Juan was brought down in the box. Referee Djalma Beltrami awarded a penalty, which Obina missed.

In the second half, Flamengo showed more aggression with Maxi replacing Kleberson. But Bangu opened the scoring. Rafael Soeiro scored from an offside position.

Another penalty was awarded by the referee, but Marcelinho Paraíba made no mistake. The comeback was met with a questionable offside call. Soon after, the referee disallowed a Bangu goal that would have ended in the net.

The winning goal came from a corner kick. A well-placed header sealed the final score in a game of confusing refereeing.
