In the first Flamengo x Vasco do Engenhão, Rubro-Negros dream of an unforgettable victory

October 24, 2015. Maracanã has reopened after the World Cup and is just being prepared for the 2016 Olympics. Diego Maurício, 24, remembers a match that marked his life, played exactly five seasons ago, two days after he signed his contract extension. In his first year with Flamengo as a professional, he played in the first Clássico dos Milhões in the history of the Engenhão, scored a goal and his team came away with the victory.
It's for a future like this, with their name etched in history and unforgettable memories, that not only Diego Maurício, but the entire Flamengo squad, will take the field this Sunday at 18:30 PM to face Vasco in the first duel against their biggest rival at the João Havelange Municipal Olympic Stadium. Wanting to win not only to earn three more points, but also to make history, Flamengo heads into the game motivated and ready to give their all in pursuit of a positive result.
"It certainly has everything to be an unforgettable game. My first Flamengo and Vasco match, my first at the Engenhão... It's really going to be a match to remember. Hopefully with a goal, with a victory. I hope to give this gift to the Red-Black Nation, and who knows, maybe we'll even make history. For me, there's not much difference between the Engenhão and the Maracanã. At the Maracanã I played less, at the Engenhão I've been playing more, and I hope I can score my first goal and help the team win," said Diego.
The experienced Deivid, who turned 31 last Friday, has a two-season contract with Flamengo. He may not get to play a derby at the Maracanã, but he knows he can make history by playing in the matches at the Engenhão, starting this Sunday. A declared Flamengo fan since childhood, he wants to fulfill his dream of scoring a goal and winning the Clássico dos Milhões in his debut, to have another triumphant story to tell.
"It's gratifying to have this opportunity to score goals, to give Flamengo victories... Of course, it will remain in our memories, in history, but the important thing is that we play well and win. Regardless of the location of the game, it's very important. I hope Flamengo wins, and if possible, with a goal from me," said the striker, who also wants to take the opportunity to poke fun at his teammates from Nova Iguaçu, his hometown, who support the rival team.
"Every game always has friends and cousins cheering, and I hope to repay them with goals. There are also a lot of Vasco fans, Botafogo fans, and Tricolor fans, but God willing, we'll win the game on Sunday," he added.
With 37 points, after the 3-0 victory over Internacional last Saturday, Rubro-Negro occupies 13th place in the table and is already in the qualifying zone for the 2011 Copa Sudamericana. Vasco, with 41, is 11th.
Coach Confidence – Coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is also highly motivated for this derby. Also a Vasco fan, but already accustomed to facing the rival, Vanderlei says he can't think of a better opponent to beat—which he has done every time he's faced Vasco as coach.
"Of course I'll always want to beat Vasco. And when Vasco plays against other teams, I'll root against them too because I'm a fan," explained Luxa, counting on the talent of his forwards to find the net against the opponent.
"They're fast players who find space and don't stay still in the box. They're getting this opportunity, and I've been starting with Diego to help him gain experience. Diego is a young player with a lot of potential, and he'll have to show on the field that he's capable of being a starter," he added.
