Winning the sixth title marks the first Brazilian title won in the same year as a state title

When Héber Roberto Lopes blew his whistle around 7 p.m. on Sunday, Flamengo had won much more than just its sixth title. For the first time in its history, the club had won the Brazilian Championship in the same year it won the state championship.
Interestingly, this happy coincidence hadn't happened even during the Zico era, when Flamengo won the World Cup and the Copa Libertadores. Not even in 1999, when Carlinhos' team won the state championship and another significant international trophy, the Mercosul Cup.
In 1980, the great team led by Cláudio Coutinho lifted the first national trophy in the first half of the year, but lost the chance to win the state championship for the fourth time - in that year's edition, Flamengo didn't even reach the final, in which Fluminense beat Vasco.
In 1981, Flamengo's golden year, the team won the State Championship in December, but stumbled in the Brazilian Championship against Botafogo. In 1982, after winning its second national championship with a victory over Grêmio at the Olympic Stadium, Flamengo lost to Vasco in the state final. In 1983, its third Brazilian championship came with goals from Zico, Leandro, and Adílio. But the team would ultimately miss the chance to end the year with a golden ending, with a loss to Fluminense.
In 1987, the calendar was different. Joy came at the end of the year, with a goal by Bebeto that sealed the fourth Brazilian championship, months after the disappointment of the defeat to Vasco in the local competition. In 1992, Flamengo defeated Botafogo and won their fifth title. But they were unable to overcome the closure of Maracanã. In a championship in which both derbies against Vasco were played at São Januário, the Vasco club prevailed.
The six-time champions' feat is impressive. Not even in the years Flamengo won the Copa do Brasil (1990 and 2006) had the club won the state championship. Nor did this coincide in 1961, when they won the Rio-São Paulo championship. In all these years, the state title went to General Severiano.
2001 was the only year Flamengo won a national title—the Champions' Cup—in the same year as a state title. To achieve this, they defeated Vasco da Gama at the Maracanã and prevailed on aggregate against São Paulo.
