Anyone who watched the "Game of Stars" early Sunday evening at the Maracanã stadium had the impression that there had never been any kind of bad blood between two of the greatest players in Brazilian football history. In a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, Romário and Zico, who were also joined by Emperor Adriano, this year's top scorer in the Brazilian Championship, were the highlights of the event organized by Galinho.
Their good humor, along with their brilliant plays, were the hallmarks of this trio, a dream for any red-and-black fan. At halftime, Zico mocked Adriano, who missed a few scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes.
"I'm doing everything I can to get him to score, but it seems like he doesn't want to crown us. We exchange passes and create scoring chances, but then Adriano goes there and misses them (laughs)," joked the Galinho, whose speech was endorsed by Romário. "It's time for Adriano to crown me. Just get the ball in first time, because he's got a lot of speed," added the Baixinho.
Despite being criticized by two of the greatest scorers in Brazilian football history, Adriano took it in stride and took the opportunity to praise Zico and Romário. According to him, Sunday's match was an opportunity to fulfill a childhood dream.
"I really wanted to play with Zico and Romário. I already played against Romário, in a match between Flamengo and Vasco. Now I've played with Zico, my childhood idol. It's the highlight of the year. It's very easy to play with them, they have a different vision than today's players, something more. I missed a few goals, but it was fun and a pleasure. Happiness is what matters," assured the Emperor.
To prove that the exchange of barbs after the 1998 World Cup is long over, Zico and Romário hugged, exchanged passes, made brilliant plays and, of course, exchanged compliments.
"We've had so many parties at the Maracanã, and he, an icon of Brazilian and Rio de Janeiro football, couldn't be missed. We've put a damper on the matter. Everyone has the right to make mistakes. We've learned to accept criticism over the years, because sometimes we get carried away by things we don't say. A word can be misinterpreted, and people end up taking advantage of that. It's beautiful to see Romário participating here," analyzed Galinho, who, according to Baixinho, is "one of the greatest players in the history of world football."
Romário also stated that "it would have been a dream for many fans" to have seen the duo of him and Zico wearing Flamengo's jersey. They were unable to fulfill this dream, but the nearly 90 minutes they played together on Sunday night made it possible to make it, even if only a little, a reality.
