For David, Vagner Love, and Michael, facing Corinthians at Pacaembu is nothing new. The three players have already played derbies against the black and whites during their time at Palmeiras. Aware of the difficulties of this duel, the trio knows that Flamengo will not have an easy time in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16.
Michael, who was sent off in the first game of the series, will not be able to play next Wednesday, but spoke with his teammates and expressed confidence in qualifying.
"I've played against them about four times. If I'm not mistaken, I won two, drew one, and lost the other. I think not only I but everyone in the group knows that the game won't be easy. Corinthians really wants the Libertadores title; it's their centennial year, but I'm sure our motivation is also high, and the team goes to São Paulo thinking about returning with the qualification," he said.
Defender David has also faced Corinthians frequently. And wearing the jersey of the club's biggest rival, Palmeiras, he's never lost a derby.
"I played a lot against Corinthians for Palmeiras and never lost. I hope to keep those numbers for Flamengo. I know it's difficult to play at Pacaembu, I've played there before, the fans really put a lot of pressure on, but our team is capable of getting a win. And if we lose 2-1, for example, that's fine, as long as we come back with the spot," he said.
Top scorer Vagner Love also knows Wednesday's opponent well and has even scored a goal against Corinthians.
"I've only played against Corinthians twice. I won once, 4-1, when I first joined Palmeiras, and drew the other, 2-2, last year. In the first game, I remember scoring a goal. They're a tough opponent, without a doubt, but we're going for the qualification," he added.
