A team under restructuring
Rogério Lourenço emphasizes that the red-black team is still going through an adaptation phase with the arrival of reinforcements

Flamengo is currently reshaping its roster. The team lost some players from the 2009 Brazilian Championship squad, but the board has taken action, bringing in replacements, and coach Rogério Lourenço has been trying to build the team with the best he has available each round. The coach believes the team is evolving and is betting that, once the team clicks, the group will gel.
"Of course, when the team takes the field, we want the best result and we're trying to do our best. In Curitiba, we could have gotten a win, but we didn't. Even with the problems, we're fighting, and I believe that with the reinforcements, we'll fit in and fight for the top spots. We lost important players, and the team is being rebuilt, it's qualifying. We paid a price for that, with the lack of cohesion, some players not being at their best, but we're building a strong squad," he said.
The coach points out that each round the team has had debuts, such as Diogo's, which should happen this Thursday, which makes it a little more difficult to work on the chemistry between the players.
"One week Val debuted, then Renato, then Leandro, now Diogo... It's complicated. We're trying to do the best we can, but it's different to put the team together during the championship," analyzed the coach, who recalled the importance of a key player in the attack for the great achievements in Flamengo's history.
"In all of Flamengo's great victories, they had a key player in the box, like Adriano last year, Gaúcho in 1992, and Nunes in the greatest Flamengo of all time. I think that regardless of the tactical scheme, it's important to have this player who will make the difference and put the ball in," he observed.
Renewal celebrated – In addition to signing reinforcements, Flamengo has also been working to maintain its core squad. Defender David had already signed a four-year contract earlier this month, and now it's Chilean Maldonado's turn to extend his contract with the Red-Blacks until the end of 2012.
"Maldonado is a spectacular player and a top-notch individual. Unfortunately, he's had a few injuries, but we've put together a very good plan for him. He's getting back into shape, and we hope to have him back soon. He's already heading into this game and will be a player who can be a huge help," he concluded.
