A childhood dream is about to come true: Deivid will play at the Maracanã wearing the Flamengo jersey. It seems the striker will indeed make his debut for Flamengo next Sunday (September 05.09th) against Santos at the Maracanã. However, while he will be playing his first game for the club at the stadium, he will also be saying goodbye to the venue.
The Maracanã will close for renovations in preparation for the 2014 World Cup, which will be held in Brazil, and this will be the last Brazilian Championship game before the works officially begin. The stadium is only expected to reopen in 2013. Until then, Deivid hopes to have only good memories.
"I wanted to play more at the Maracanã, but I had the privilege of playing a final against Flamengo at the Maracanã, for Cruzeiro, and being there is different. I wanted to play more, but it will be good. I'll make the most of it to preserve it for my children," he said.
Despite this, Flamengo's number 99 doesn't believe the team will be harmed by playing away from the biggest stadium in the world. According to him, the stadium ends up having a somewhat neutral atmosphere due to its history in world football.
"I find the Maracanã a bit neutral. Every time I've played at the Maracanã I've felt that. It's more enjoyable to play in a stadium with the fans closer, to put on the pressure. In my view, playing away from the Maracanã isn't a disadvantage," he added.
