Just 39 years old, with a commendable playing record and experience with youth teams and national teams. This was Rogério Lourenço's legacy before taking over Flamengo's professional team. This, along with his convictions, which he passed on to his players in the short time he had to work on the eve of the biggest challenge of his career: leading the team to the quarterfinals of a Copa Libertadores, a feat not achieved in 17 years.
A time, by the way, that this red-and-black group is well known for. It also took Flamengo 17 years to win the Brazilian Championship, and they did so last year. An achievement that was praised by president Patricia Amorim.
"Today's result was very important. We hadn't reached the quarterfinals in 17 years, and that needs to be highlighted. It was an impressive result. It's the result of a lot of work. I know I'm contributing to a better Flamengo, and the results are already showing," said the president, who assured that she was satisfied with Rogério's work.
"I'm going to talk to Rogério. I'm very confident with him and happy with the group's acceptance of the coach. The natural course of things is for him to be made permanent. Rogério is Flamengo's coach today," she added.
The coach, in turn, praised the good result achieved and thanked the group for welcoming him with open arms and embracing his work philosophy.
"This result is very important to me. Starting a career in the Libertadores, a knockout tournament, against the team that finished first in the qualifying round is very difficult. But I have to emphasize that I already had experience in the youth academy and with the youth national teams, which gave me the know-how to work in this short space of time. Given the circumstances, I knew I wouldn't be able to implement everything I wanted, so I decided to follow my convictions. I brought in Rômulo to free up the full-backs, and the group embraced this idea. If that hadn't happened, nothing would have worked out," he noted.
