Nothing beats a victory in a classic, when everyone seemed skeptical, to give a group peace of mind and morale. That's what Flamengo needed this Wednesday (July 14.07), when they faced Botafogo at Maracanã. In their first game after the World Cup, with a revamped team and after receiving much criticism, the Rubro-Negro responded on the field: they won, with grit, and left the field to a standing ovation from the fans.
An achievement that was highly praised by coach Rogério Lourenço, who said the team proved it was on track to compete for the top spots in the Brazilian Championship.
"Today's victory was important for the self-esteem of all the red-and-blacks. We went through a difficult period due to off-field issues, and only on the field could we respond. It was a difficult game, against a traditional opponent, and there was a concern about wanting to outdo ourselves. A victory in a game like this is very important; it boosts morale," observed the coach, who was focused on trying to surprise Botafogo in some way.
"The teams know each other well. Botafogo is a strong team, led by Joel. My strategy was to avoid repeating mistakes from previous games and try to neutralize Botafogo's counterattacks. Joel knows Flamengo well, so we work on variations in training, always looking for alternatives to help us play," said Rogério.
The red-black commander also took the opportunity to explain his team's tactical positioning and praise the players' discipline.
"There's a tactical pattern. If it doesn't exist, it's impossible to work. They have to know their assigned roles. Pet usually drops to the left, and Willians works on the right, because Kleberson also drops to the left. Pet has freedom to move, but the team must always be compact. Our tactic today is to keep the team balanced, with a strong defense that gets forward well," he added.
