With 30 points – three behind the leader – in 17 games, Flamengo is having its second-best Brazilian Championship campaign in the era of the points system, which began in 2003. This year's team is surpassed only by the 2011 campaign, when it had 34 points and occupied second place. In 2009, when it won its sixth national title, Flamengo had 24 points and was in 11th position at this stage of the tournament.
Owner of the largest fan base in the world, Flamengo counts on the massive support of its fans even in away games and has not disappointed: the Rubro-Negro is the most difficult away team in the Brasileirão. In eight games, they have four wins - against Ponte Preta, Cruzeiro, Santa Cruz and Coritiba - and one draw, totaling 13 points, resulting in a 54% success rate, the best in the championship.
The team managed by Zé Ricardo is on a roll and hasn't lost in four rounds, since July 3rd. In the last four games, Flamengo has won ten out of twelve possible points, beating Atlético-MG (2-0), América-MG (2-1), and Coritiba (2-0), and drawing with Botafogo (3-3). Paolo Guerrero and Felipe Vizeu share the title of top scorer for the team in the competition, each with four goals in the Brazilian Championship.
