It's almost funny how things can change in a year in football. At the end of 2009, Welinton went to Italy with his friend Adriano to take a vacation and celebrate the sixth Brazilian championship title. Those were unforgettable days for the defender, who at the time was just another option in the Flamengo team. This year, however, Flamengo fought against relegation until the end of the competition, but Welinton finishes the season as a starter and predicting an even more successful 2011 for him.
Promoted to the professional team for the first time in 2007, the defender has already experienced highs and lows with the Flamengo jersey. He was criticized by some fans in his first opportunities, but now he has established himself and definitively won the trust of the fans and also of coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, who made him a starter and hasn't taken him out since.
Aware that responsibility and recognition have increased, Welinton knows that 2011 is a crucial year. Excited for the season that begins on January 3rd, the number 23 jersey wearer is betting on hard work and team unity, coupled with Vanderlei Luxemburgo's good work, to once again win titles at Gávea.
Check out the defender's interview on the official website:
Season 2010 - It was a difficult, complicated season. The Brazilian Championship didn't end up the way we expected. But on a personal level, it was important for me to finish the year playing. Of course, Flamengo always has to fight for titles, for the top positions, and we wanted that too. In any case, we managed to stay in Série A, we secured a spot in the Copa Sudamericana, and now we're working to make 2011 better than 2010.
Luxembourg - Professor Luxemburgo gave me the chance to show my work, and I hope to continue my career next year and help Flamengo. He talks to everyone. Perhaps because I'm younger, he tries to give me a little more attention, teach me, and I always try to do what he asks: to be tenacious and fast. Especially in one-on-one situations with the strikers.
Next year - I hope to have a great preseason, continue being a starter, and I aim for great achievements next season. We grow in life, learning from a young age, from a young age. Everyone here knows the pressure. We have to face it head-on, whatever comes. I've been coming on regularly since last year, earning my place, and I'm very happy about that. I want to help Flamengo and achieve many more things here.
Defender Defender - I really do have the characteristic of being a "true defender," playing without messing around and keeping it simple back there, but nowadays, I believe that keeping it simple is doing it beautifully. Vanderlei approves of this and arrived warning that there can be no messing around back there.
Future - I am an employee of the club, my transfer rights belong 100% to Flamengo, and that gives me peace of mind to work. I hope to grow and help the club achieve great things. I intend to stay at Flamengo and learn more. It's still too early to think about leaving the team. It was a difficult year; our group didn't win any titles, but what mattered was that we managed to avoid relegation. This serves as a lesson so that it doesn't happen again next year.
Apprenticeship - I feel more prepared, experienced, and stronger, especially because of the run of games. We younger players have a great desire to learn, to win more and more, to one day become great idols, to make history at Flamengo. The desire is to contribute, to be able to help in any way possible.
