One of Flamengo's players who stood out positively in the second half of the year was defender Welinton. The young defender gained ground with the arrival of coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo and became a regular starter for the red-and-black team. Happy with his positive personal moment, he aims to end the year with a victory against Santos this weekend, leading the team to the 2011 South American Championship.
Relieved that the team no longer faces relegation, Welinton assures that Flamengo's focus remains on the championship. According to him, the team has been preparing well in this final week of the season to secure a victory against Santos.
"We no longer have the fear of the second division, but the focus is the same. The responsibility is the same. We have to work hard, we know that, to get the result there," he said.
The defender recalls that the season was difficult for the team and also analyzes its good form. According to him, this is just the beginning of a streak that could continue in 2011.
"It was a difficult, complicated season. The Brazilian Championship didn't end up going the way we expected. But on a personal level, it was important for me to finish the year playing. Professor Luxemburgo gave me the chance to show my work, and I hope to continue my career next year and help Flamengo," he added.
At 21, Welinton earned his first start in 2009 and has since made 50 appearances for the first team, scoring one goal and receiving only ten cards. He has never been sent off.
