After winning the bronze trophy in the 2010 Brazilian Championship's best right-sided midfielder award, Willians ends another season with Flamengo. Another year of many tackles, much applause from the fans, and much learning. Still young, at 23, he knows he needs to continue evolving to have a successful football career.
The titles, which came in double in 2009, his first season at Gávea, were not forthcoming this year. The joy and euphoria of the sixth and fifth titles gave way to the pressure of the fight against the bottom of the table. And that, obviously, wasn't what Willians and the Flamengo players wanted for this year.
"It wasn't the year we expected, for sure, but in the end we achieved our goal of fighting for a place in the South American and staying in Serie A," he commented.
Next year, Willians still doesn't know if he'll stay at Gávea. Despite having a contract with Flamengo, the defensive midfielder is coveted by other teams, and his stay isn't guaranteed.
"I still don't know if I'll stay. It depends on a lot of things, but we'll wait. Whatever's best for me and Flamengo will happen," he added.
Flamengo's squad is on vacation until January 3rd, when they will return to begin pre-season training for 2011. Until then, there should be a restructuring of the group that will wear the Sacred Mantle next season.
