Zé Ricardo: "Our concern is game by game"

Coach says the team has a lot to improve and praises the group's unity and commitment

After five rounds, Flamengo was eight points behind the leader. This Saturday (6), after the 1-0 victory over Atlético-PR, the Rubro-Negro will sleep in the lead and, at most, at the end of the round, will be two points behind the first place in the Brasileirão. For coach Zé Ricardo, success is the result of the group's evolution, unity and commitment to achieving its objectives.

One step at a time

Our focus is on playing one game at a time. Five rounds ago, the gap to the leader was eight points. We reduced it to five, then three, and then two. With today's victory, the worst that can happen is maintaining that gap. It's important for us to be among the clubs at the top of the table. We still have a lot of room to grow and evolve. The team has been showing this. We're six games unbeaten. The group is very united and committed. So I can only believe that we'll continue to grow significantly in the competition.

Value of victory

We've had a good record here in Cariacica, but we have to evaluate each game individually. Today we played very consistently, creating many chances. It was a deserved victory. Atlético-PR is a formidable opponent and one of the most organized teams in the league. They have an excellent coach (Paulo Autuori), whom I admire. Even so, we managed to get the three points we so desired.

Defender

We've been playing more consistently, with defensive balance, conceding less. We've managed to do it the way we wanted, with the marking a little higher up. This makes defending easier. Congratulations to the entire team. The more we can generate positive behavior through this, I think we can achieve results.

Good atmosphere

I can't separate myself from the athlete's human condition. If someone feels good as a human being, they'll perform better as an athlete. I leave satisfied. At the end of the game, I was a little emotional. It's two months of work. It's a lot of pressure to work at a huge club like Flamengo, but it's also incredibly proud. I feel I have the trust of the group and the board.

Fernandinho

We knew it would be a tough game on both sides of the pitch. Éverton has been crucial defensively and offensively. We didn't believe he (Éverton) could last the entire match; they were two very intense matches. We decided to bet on Fernandinho. He didn't have a brilliant performance on Wednesday, but we were certain that, based on what he'd been showing in training, he could do well. A player needs confidence to perform better. I'm sure Fernando can be very useful to the team. His persistence has been the one who has benefited. He's a hard-working athlete with a lot of room to grow as an athlete and a player. We're working on that, and he'll be a huge help to us.
