The greatest idol in the history of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo and, currently, the club's executive director of football, Zico assessed the team's return to the Brazilian Championship in an exclusive interview with the Official Website. In three games, the team earned seven of nine points, beating Botafogo and Atlético-GO and drawing with Avaí, pleasing the Galinho.
For Zico, the 1-0 victory over Botafogo was the perfect start for the Rubro-Negro in the second half of the year. However, he believes the team needs to improve to remain in the running for the top spots.
"It was a good start. The victory in the derby helped a lot, but we know we need to improve to maintain consistency in a balanced and difficult competition like this. Every game is a challenge," said the director, noting that in the Brasileirão, teams at the top can stumble against teams fighting relegation.
"It's a championship where those at the bottom can beat those at the top, as happened with Corinthians and Atlético-GO. The important thing is to accumulate points, stay around the top four zone to fight for the title in the final stage," he said.
Aware of the difficulties the squad is facing due to the restructuring it is undergoing, Zico is betting on the debut of the recently signed Jean, Val Baiano and Renato to give more body to the red-black group.
"I believe Flamengo is going through a big change, especially since they lost important players, and every transformation has a cost. But thankfully, we're back in good shape, and now we'll see what happens with the arrival of the reinforcements who are about to make their debuts," he added.
