Zico optimistic about Flamengo in the Brasileirão

Football CEO believes Rubro-Negro can fight for the title again

The reigning Brazilian champion, Flamengo, currently sits in eighth place in the 2010 Brasileirão standings. However, according to the club's executive director of football, Zico, the team has every chance of improving throughout the competition. Encouraged by the arrivals of Deivid and Diogo to bolster the attack, "Galinho" believes the team from Gávea has what it takes to fight for the seventh title.

"Without a doubt, if Deivid and Diogo are successful, the team will fight for the title," he assured.

In good humor, Zico stated that the duo will have to work, especially considering the high cost to the club (the transfer fee was not disclosed). Furthermore, the director defended the other forwards on the squad who were criticized by some fans.

"They can't take on this responsibility. This demand isn't fair. Deivid and Diogo can, especially considering what they cost (laughs). Their arrival even makes Leandro Amaral's job easier, as he came as a gamble to get back to his best physical shape more calmly, not as a solution," he observed.

With 20 points, Flamengo is 12 behind Fluminense, who lead the competition. However, with the Brasileirão still in its 15th round, the red-and-blacks believe they can reach the top of the table with a similar surge to last year.

"It's possible. The Brazilian Championship is still in the first round. Last year, Flamengo won the championship this way, with a good run in the final stretch. Flamengo has the ability to get there," said supporter Renato, also recently hired to strengthen the red-and-black squad.
