Flamengo's Artistic Gymnastics athletes begin pre-season at Ninho do Urubu

Senior gymnasts return to training for competitions in 2018

The athletes of Flamengo's senior artistic gymnastics team are back in training, already looking ahead to the 2018 competitions. As part of their preparation, the gymnasts began preseason training at the George Helal Training Center, Ninho do Urubu, home of Flamengo's football team.

For two days, Mais Querido athletes performed strength, choreography, and physical conditioning exercises at the Vargem Grande training center, as well as motivational and team-building exercises. The club's scientific coordinator, Luiz Antonio Moreira, explains the initiative.

"This initiative originated from the Sports Science department at CUIDAR, a unified center that offers treatment and training support to Olympic athletes, with the aim of providing a rich moment in terms of integration for the athletes and, at the same time, with activities inherent to this training period being developed in another environment," he states.

The event was celebrated by the athletes and coaching staff, who were able to take advantage of the training center's facilities, including physical therapy. Rebeca Andrade, recovering from cruciate ligament surgery in her right knee about six weeks ago, completed part of her treatment at Ninho. Jade Barbosa, an Olympic gymnast and multiple champion for Flamengo, commented on her excitement at visiting the training center.

"I think it's every fan's dream, and we, as athletes, wouldn't be left behind. It's great to be able to enjoy this incredible space at the start of this season," says Jade.

Coach Angelo Santos also celebrated the opportunity.

"It's very beneficial and really cool to be able to use the facilities at Ninho do Urubu, which are fantastic. I've never had the chance, here in Brazil, to train in a place like this. It's really good for them; it's different from leaving the gym. Here, we work on the skills we would work on at the club, adding the psychological aspect of motivation," says the coach.

Flamengo's artistic gymnastics athletes return to training in Gávea this week, with the 2018 competitions in sight.

The artistic gymnastics teams of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo rely on resources from their sponsors – AmBev, Rede D'or, IRB Brasil RE, CSN, Brasil Plural, EY – via the Federal Incentive Law/Ministry of Sports (IR), in addition to support from the Brazilian Committee of Clubs (CBC) resulting from the decentralization of resources originating from the Pelé Law.
