July began with a new addition to the Flamengo artistic gymnastics arena. The "Mais Querido" (The Most Beloved) team will welcome a new athlete on June 19th, who will represent Flamengo in the men's category. Marcus Paulo Oliveira, 20, comes from Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, to Rio de Janeiro and will make Gávea his new home. The gymnast, who excels on the horizontal bar and floor exercise, is a former Pan American Junior runner-up and South American Junior champion, both titles with the Brazilian National Team.
The athlete, who will be coached by the red-and-black coach Roberto Nassar, began practicing the sport at the age of 11. An admirer of British Olympic medalist Max Whitlock, who won gold on the floor exercise at the 2016 Rio Games, Marcos couldn't hide his joy at wearing the Sacred Mantle.
"Since I was little, it's been a dream of mine to train at Flamengo. The best gymnasts in the country have trained here, and they even represented Brazil at the Rio Olympics. It's truly an honor to be able to wear this jersey," the gymnast revealed.
Luisa Parente, Land Sports Manager at Mais Querido, commented on the new addition to the red-black team in the sport.
"He's a high-level gymnast who really comes to contribute. We hope his presence will encourage the younger athletes, youth and children, so they also have a role model within the gym. We see Marcus's arrival as a very good addition, especially to help with our work rebuilding the men's category," said the manager.
Luisa also highlighted the qualities of the new member of Flamengo's artistic gymnastics team, who has good sporting and academic performance.
"Marcus truly proves himself to be an athlete, with all the merit of the concept. He is a person with exemplary discipline, demonstrated and also observed by the coaches. He not only has the athlete profile that Flamengo wants, but will also be a great role model for the younger players," he concluded.
Marcus will join Pedro Barbosa on the men's adult team. The women's adult team is comprised of Jade Barbosa, Pedro's sister, Flávia Saraiva, Rebeca Andrade, Julie Kim, Milena Theodoro, Maria Cecilia, Isabelle Cruz, Leticia Costa, and Luisa Kirchmayer.
The Flamengo Regatas Club's artistic gymnastics teams receive funding from their sponsors—AmBev, Rede D'or, IRB Brasil RE, CSN, Brasil Plural, and EY—via the Federal Incentive Law/Ministry of Sports (IR), as well as support from the Brazilian Club Committee (CBC) through the decentralization of resources from the Pelé Law. The Flamengo Guardian Angel Project, a personal tax transfer, benefits all Olympic sports of the Most Beloved Club.
