With the Pan American Games in Canada in July and the World Championships in Scotland in October in sight - which could earn Brazil an unprecedented team spot at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games - two Brazilian gymnasts are competing in the World Cup in Brazil, which begins this Friday (May 01.05). A precursor to such important competitions in the Olympic cycle, the World Challenge Cup Series will also be a major test for Rebeca Andrade and Letícia Costa, in addition to helping determine the athletes who will serve the Brazilian National Team in the upcoming championships this year.
The Gymnastics World Cup will feature high-level athletes and will run until Sunday (03.05), at the Ibirapuera Gymnasium, in São Paulo. Buy your tickets online. Because it's in Brazil, the event will also provide athletes with an on-site experience, with a large audience - as is expected in Rio 2016, as gymnastics is the fourth most sought-after sport in terms of ticket sales.
Rebeca is in her first year in the Adult category, but she has already demonstrated her talent competing against older athletes in her debut in the category at the World Cup in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The 15-year-old finished third on the uneven bars podium. Letícia, more experienced, has already won this year's championship. In February, the gymnast competed at the Houston National Invitational and finished first in the individual all-around rankings, winning gold on floor exercise, silver on vault, and bronze on parallel exercise. In São Paulo this weekend, both will compete on vault; Rebeca will also compete on uneven bars.
For Letícia, this will be her first World Cup event, despite having already represented Brazil at the 2013 World Championships in Belgium. A source of great joy, according to the gymnast. "It will be my first World Cup. I feel privileged to be able to debut in this ranking within my home country. I have no doubt that the Brazilians will support us enthusiastically. I'm looking forward to being out there competing and feeling the excitement of the Brazilian fans," said Letícia.
Flamengo still has a third representative in the Brazilian delegation, the red-black coach Keli Kitaura.
