Men's gymnastics team grows in youth categories

Coach Roberto Nassar celebrates new equipment and talent coming to Sempre Flamengo Sports School

The Flamengo men's artistic gymnastics team is growing in Gávea. Over the past two years, during the club's Olympic sports restructuring, the boys' team has remained the same and has even gained members from the Sempre Flamengo Sports School for the Pre-Child category. Coach Roberto Nassar recounts the group's journey since the Cláudio Coutinho gymnasium fire.

"We have 14 boys on the team today. After the 2012 disaster, they trained without equipment and then at UERJ. But even with all the difficulties, we managed to keep our athletes and even expand the team with four athletes from the Sempre Flamengo Sports School. We have to remember that men's artistic gymnastics has a lot of competition from other sports like soccer, basketball, and judo. This number is very significant for us. The new equipment was our salvation; we have support again," he said.

With the gymnasium renovations and the pit soon to be completed, Flamengo should be one of the best private gymnasiums in the country by the second half of this year. The facility could serve as a breeding ground for ever-increasing talent, who, according to Nassar, must possess certain characteristics that stand out from the rest. "Body structure, physique, movement, running, motor coordination, and jumping skills," he concluded.
