The weekend was a weekend of victories for Mengão's women's artistic gymnastics team. The girls won the State Championships in both the Adult and Children's categories, held at the Claudio Coutinho gymnasium in Gávea. Hellen Vitória won the individual all-around, performing on all four apparatuses.
Olympic and world champion Rebeca Andrade competed and won the vault. The gymnast had the best average (14.45), followed by Jade Barbosa with 14.40.
"It's always great to be able to compete at home with the fans. It was a more relaxed competition, but it served as good training for the upcoming Brazilian Championship," said Rebeca, who only competed on this apparatus.
After a foot injury that sidelined her for a while, Flavia Saraiva returned to the State Championships. The gymnast performed on the balance beam and couldn't hide her joy at competing.
"It's great to be back and still compete in my hometown, at Flamengo. It was a preparatory competition for the Brazilian Championships, with just two weeks left. It's very gratifying to see people cheering for us gymnasts, with all this affection and commitment," added Flavinha, who placed second on the balance beam. Young Hellen Vitória secured the gold.
Lorrane Oliveira was the best in the parallel bar and took the gold medal with a confident performance that earned her a 13,9 from the judges.
Vice President of Olympic Sports Guilherme Kroll was present, was honored by the Rio Gymnastics Federation and spoke about the red-and-black sovereignty in the sport.
"Flamengo is a breeding ground for stars. Our kids are trained to win from an early age, and there's nothing better than having role models like Rebeca, Jade, Lorrane, and Flavinha. We have the leadership of our iron ladies, Georgette Vidor and Roberta Perilier, who lead the department masterfully. Flamengo, without a doubt, is the women's gymnastics team of Brazil," she concluded.
The red-black team will return from August 16th to 20th in the Brazilian Championship, in Lauro de Freitas, Bahia.
