Georgette Vidor analyzes the first year of her return to Flamengo: "A more than positive balance"

Technical Coordinator talks about the work carried out despite the pandemic, praises the athletes and projects a strong club in 2021

With a history filled with titles and special moments, Georgette Vidor returned to Flamengo in 2020 as technical coordinator. Due to the pandemic, the year was completely different for the sport, but she was fully dedicated to making things happen. In the absence of official competitions, the club held the 125th Anniversary Tournament, which was broadcast live on FlaTV, and the Christmas presentation. According to the director, all of this was possible thanks to the teamwork and the unwavering support of the club's renowned gymnasts.

"The results were more than positive. During the virtual training period, I never imagined it would end this way. When I saw it was possible to hold both events, I was thrilled. I partnered with Roberta (Perillier, gymnastics manager), who understood and gave me her full support... We broadcast live for the first time in gymnastics history, and 36 people watched. People aren't used to it yet, and I think it will be a constant and representative event from now on. I was able to motivate the girls on the Brazilian team, and they were crucial. Flavia and Rebeca didn't compete at the tournament because they had COVID-19, but they recovered and participated in the presentation. In fact, all the gymnasts were with us at this last event," she said.

The 2021 calendar isn't yet 100% set, but it already includes the Tokyo Olympics. Given this scenario, the coordinator stated that, while it's difficult to predict anything, the idea is to have another athlete at the Games. Regarding the Red-Black team, the focus is always on development, especially with athletes just starting out.

"I think we can only project anything with the vaccine. We have the ambition of having a second Flamengo gymnast at the Olympics. The qualifying round will be in May, in the United States, and that is our goal. I also want to strengthen our team so that, as soon as the calendar is released, everyone is prepared. I want to return to competing internationally, even with the younger ones, because I think we have a lot of talent. That's what I pass on to the coaches. We have athletes capable of being the future of Brazilian artistic gymnastics. And the examples are here: Daniele Hypolito, Flavia Saraiva, Jade Barbosa, Lorrane dos Santos, Rebeca Andrade, Isabelle Retamiro, who is now our intern, and Lorenna Antunes, also working with us. They were all part of the Brazilian national team. I, in addition to being a coach, was a coordinator for years with the national team and prepared them for competitions, so we have everything we need to be the best club in Brazil, unbeatable. In the men's team, I intend to turn things around and change things a bit. It's important to emphasize that we need to see how the pandemic plays out, but if If we get through this year, we'll be at a very high level," he said in an optimistic tone.

At the end of the chat, Georgette took stock of a season unlike any other, where reinventing herself was necessary, and also spoke with great happiness about her return to Mais Querido.

"I had 25 years of experience here, and when I became the national team coordinator, I also followed it closely. I returned with a strong desire to make Flamengo unbeatable again, but two months into the job, the pandemic hit. We didn't make any cuts to the team, and Angelo and I started virtual training. We went online at nine in the morning and left at seven every night. We created assessments and competitions to motivate, and we did everything we could to support our athletes. It was a difficult time, but sports taught me calm. We're pleased with the conclusion; after all, Flamengo is the heart that beats strongest," she exclaimed.

The artistic gymnastics teams of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo rely on resources from their sponsors – AmBev, Rede D'or, IRB Brasil RE, CSN, Brasil Plural, EY – via the Federal Incentive Law/Ministry of Sports (IR), in addition to support from the Brazilian Committee of Clubs (CBC) resulting from the decentralization of resources originating from the Pelé Law.
