Seeking to overcome obstacles, one of the biggest stars of the red-and-black gymnastics team, Diego Hypolito, performed well and showed he has what it takes to reach the World Championships in Japan in October. At the International Artistic Gymnastics Tournament in Natal, the gymnast left his rivals in the dust, winning three gold medals. Besides him, all six of the red-and-black athletes who represented Brazil in the competition made it to the podium.
The first gold medal came on Saturday, with the Brazilian senior team, featuring Flamengo's Diego Hypolito and Victor Rosa, securing the top spot on the team podium. The bronze medal went to Brazil's B team, with Petrix Barbosa representing Flamengo. The athlete from São Bernardo do Campo also finished second in the individual all-around with 86.750 points.
In the women's competition, the Brazilian senior team, led by Gabriela Soares, took first place. The youth team, which was only present to gain experience for the 2016 Olympics, also reached the podium and secured the bronze medal with the help of the red-and-blacks Lorrana dos Santos and Isabelle Cristina.
On Sunday, it was time for the apparatus final, and Flamengo once again secured top spots in every event they competed in. Two-time world champion on the floor exercise, Diego Hypolito, showed he's recovered from surgery. He performed a highly challenging series, closing the performance with a triple pirouette, and drew applause from the crowd. The result could only be gold, with 15.875 points. Victor Rosa completed the red-and-black double in the event, taking silver (15.100).
And Diego didn't stop there, he still shone by being the best placed on the vault, with 15.400 points and Petrix had the highest score on the fixed bar: 14.375.
"This series is the most difficult of my career, starting at 16.80. I'm back now 100%, and there's a whole team involved in this to achieve the final result," said Diego, thanking, among others, the coach and the team psychologist.
In the women's event, Gabriela Soares, the only Flamengo gymnast in the apparatus final, also performed well. She secured silver in the women's floor event with 13.550 points.
The 2011 Brazilian Gymnastics Trophy champions, Sergio Sasaki and Daniele Hypolito, were unable to compete due to injuries. Jade Barbosa, who suffered from a kidney problem, also missed the competition in Natal. However, all three athletes are expected to compete in the Brazilian Championships, held in July in São Paulo.
