Due to an injury to his left ankle and foot, gymnast Diego Hypolito is out of the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, which will be held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in October. The decision to withdraw was made early Monday afternoon, following a consultation between the two-time world champion and Dr. Robson de Bem, a sports medicine specialist who has long followed the athlete's career.

"Due to repetitive trauma during training, some fragments of the gymnast's left ankle became detached, causing chronic inflammation of the tendons and cartilage. This type of repetitive trauma is a very common injury in athletes of other sports such as volleyball, soccer, and basketball. As the pain worsened during the Brazilian Championship, we withdrew Diego from the Pre-Pan Championships to improve his condition, and there was an improvement. As the pain returned to him significantly, we performed more thorough tests and determined that there is a high chance he will require surgery. Therefore, he is ruled out of the World Championships, and the forecast, if he undergoes surgery, is that he will return to full activity in January," commented Dr. Robson de Bem.

A medalist at the South American Games, in three stages of the World Cup and the Brazilian Championship this year, Diego lamented not going to the World Cup:

"I'm sad about this situation because 2010 was being one of the best years of my career and for the first time, an injury will keep me out of a competition of great importance. The fact that I have to undergo possible surgery worries me because I'll have to race against time to be well prepared for next year's Pre-Olympics," said Diego.
