The technical committee of the Brazilian women's artistic gymnastics team, led by Oleg Ostapenko, defined this Thursday (31/7) the group that will officially represent Brazil during the Beijing Olympics.
Among the 10 gymnasts confirmed by the Ukrainian coach are Jade Barbosa and Daniele Hypólito of Flamengo. The selection was made based on evaluations by the coaching staff, just before departure for Beijing.
Jade will be competing on all four apparatus (Floor, Vault, Uneven Parallel Bars and Beam) and fighting for medals in the Individual All-Around.
Diego, one of the favorites for gold in the floor exercise, where he holds the title of two-time world champion, will be the sole representative of the men's team (with the exception of reserve Arthur Zanetti). The gymnast will be joined by coach Renato Araújo.
The selected team will travel this Friday (August 1st) at 8:9 am (Japan time), the night before Brazil, to China. Everyone will head straight to the Olympic Village, where they will be based until August 10th, the day of the first qualifying round for men's gymnastics.
The women's team begins competing in the Olympic Games the following day (August 10th), also in the qualifying rounds. This stage of the competition will determine the top eight gymnasts on each apparatus, the top eight teams, and the 8 best-ranked gymnasts to compete for the Individual All-Around title.
