With four red-and-black players, the Brazilian artistic gymnastics team finished 16th at the World Championships in China. This position guarantees the girls a spot in the next edition of the championship, in 2015, which will be a qualifying round for Rio 2016. The top eight countries will qualify for the Olympic Games, and the teams from ninth to 16th place will compete for four more spots through the Pre-Olympics.
The Flamengo athletes representing Brazil were Julie Kim, Letícia Costa, Isabelle Cruz, and Maria Cecília Cruz, who was the top Brazilian in vault at just 16 years old. This was the athlete's first World Championships, having won silver in the team competition with the Brazilian national team at the Pan American Games in Canada this year. The Flamengo team's standouts, Rebeca Andrade, due to age, and Jade Barbosa, due to injury, were unable to compete.
"The debut is always very difficult, it's a huge championship, but the goal this year was really to be among the 24 to qualify for the 2015 World Cup. It's always good for the more experienced athletes to support the younger girls. I sent a message to all of them, but not being there every day makes a difference. Now it's time to train even more, I think they enjoyed the experience. By 2015, I should be fine and Rebeca (Andrade) will be old enough to participate," recalled Jade, who is recovering well from her knee injury.
