Making his Olympic debut, Brazilian men's artistic gymnast Sergio Sasaki made history in men's artistic gymnastics this Wednesday (August 01.08) at the North Greenwich Arena in London. The athlete from Gávea, a leading name in the sport's new generation, finished 10th out of 24 competitors in the individual all-around final, scoring 88.965 points, a first for the country. Sasaki competed on six apparatuses: floor exercise, vault, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars, and horizontal bar.

With an excellent performance throughout the competition, the athlete is the Brazilian gymnast with the best performance in London so far. This was the first time a Brazilian representative reached an individual all-around final at the Olympic Games.

In the first event of the day, Sasaki performed well on the pommel horse, earning 14.366 points. On the rings, he made a few mistakes and lost some points, reaching 14.233. His best score came on the vault: 16.100. On the parallel bars, the gymnast performed the element that bears his name and scored 15.200. On the horizontal bar, he maintained his strong performance, scoring 14.833. And on the final apparatus, the floor, he lost his balance and made a few mistakes that cost him a few positions. With 14.233, he had a final and historic score of 88.965 points.

"I'm very happy with my performance in my first Olympic Games. It's a historic result in gymnastics, and I leave here with my head held high and a sense of accomplishment. I'm a winner just to be here. I'm truly very happy," declared the red-and-black.
