Three red-and-blacks compete for medals at the World Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo
Diego Hypolito has a chance on the floor, Jade Barbosa on the vault and Daniele Hypolito in the individual all-around

The elite of artistic gymnastics has already demonstrated its worth at the World Pre-Olympic Championships in Tokyo, Japan. In the women's team qualification, Jade Barbosa and Daniele Hypólito were Brazil's top athletes and the only ones to qualify for the individual finals. In the men's event, the three gymnasts from Gávea and the entire Brazilian team put on a show. Diego Hypolito came closest to a third title on the floor exercise. Sérgio Sasaki and Petrix Barbosa had strong performances in the individual all-around.
Despite a result below expectations, as the girls were aiming for direct qualification for London 2012, the red-and-black gymnasts did not disappoint. To secure an Olympic spot, they needed to be among the top eight teams, but they finished 14th with 212.497 points and will compete for their spot in January in London.
Regardless, with solid performances and one who still deserves recognition on the international gymnastics scene, Daniele Hypolito secured a spot in the individual all-around finals with a score of 54.557 (vault – 13.833; parallel bars – 12.800; floor – 13.791; beam – 14.133), finishing in 29th place, but securing a spot since only two athletes per country are allowed in the finals. Jade Barbosa also performed well and is in the final on her best apparatus, vault, with the fifth-highest score in qualifying, 14.288, making her the Brazilian with the best medal chances. Priscila Cobello wasn't as fortunate and failed to qualify for any of the finals.
But if the women's overall result didn't live up to expectations, the men's exceeded them. With a strong team spirit, everyone was impressed by the Brazilian team's performances at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in the early hours of Saturday (October 09.10). Diego Hypolito had an excellent performance and made it clear that he has a chance of winning his third World title on the floor exercise and will go to the final on the apparatus with the fourth-best score in the qualifiers: 15.500. He also narrowly missed out on the final on the vault with 16.087. He is the third reserve.
The team finished its World Championships with an excellent score of 346.626, securing a 13th-place finish at the London Olympics. The victory was led by two Flamengo players: Sérgio Sasaki and Petrix Barbosa. The two had Brazil's best performance and narrowly missed out on the individual all-around, with scores of 85.123 and 84.165, respectively.
The red-black finals begin next Thursday (13.10), with Daniele Hypolito, starting at 6 am. Jade will compete for her medal on Saturday (15.10) starting at 1:30 am, as will Diego. SporTV will broadcast all the events.
