The Red-Black Blood Campaign, in partnership with Hemorio, collects 104 bags of blood in Gávea
Athletes, coaches, collaborators and associates showed up in force and could save more than 400 lives with their donations.
By Isabela Abirached - inThe goal was 80 bags of blood. But the red-blacks exceeded expectations! In the joint action between Flamengo and Hemorio, this Friday (19), in Gávea, 104 bags were collected - and each one can save up to four lives.
More than 400 people could benefit or even have their lives saved by the actions of Mais Querido athletes, coaches, employees and associates.
Dr. Vicente Jannuzzi, the physician responsible for Hemorio's operations at the social headquarters, spoke more about the importance of donating.
"Donations are essential because they help replenish supplies that are low due to the pandemic: there's more use and less donation. Campaigns like this are crucial, but let's not limit ourselves to them: go to Hemorio and donate! For women, a three-month interval between donations is required; for men, it's two months," he explained.
Antonio Canetti, coach of the women's water polo team, participated in the first edition of the Sangue Rubro-Negro Campaign and returned today for the second donation.
"I'm always donating my red-and-black blood! Doctors recommend not doing any physical activity after donating, so I told the team they were excused from today's training session so they could help. Last year I donated for the first time and thought it was a fantastic initiative. Whenever it happens, I make a point of being there," said Canetti.
Camila Nascimento, Flamengo's Social Responsibility Manager, highlighted that, with the health crisis gripping the country, it is extremely important for people to volunteer.
"We know supplies are very low, so we're united in this task force. One donation can save up to four lives, so we can make a big difference. That's why we're handing out special masks with the campaign's theme as a thank you for the commitment of those who volunteer for screening. Come to Hemorio!" he said.
One of the biggest names in national Olympic sports and a Gávea native, Daniele Hypolito joked about her weight, which prevents her from donating - but not from attending and supporting the campaign.
"I haven't gained any weight from last year to this year, so I can't donate yet (laughs). But I made a point of attending and supporting this cause. Because of COVID-19, blood banks are running low. Nation, we are great, we are strong, and together we are even stronger: I'm counting on you to donate your red-and-black blood!" the athlete concluded.
Blood donation is essential for healthcare facilities to continue treating patients during treatments and surgeries. The only way to guarantee a blood supply is through voluntary donations.
