Women's Day: Flamengo promotes actions that seek to give space to women and combat harassment

Maracanã will have an exclusive space for victim care, a minute of silence will be held to commemorate statistics, and uniforms will have a criticism and reporting channel.

A 2019 survey by the Ministry of Health, covering the period between 2014 and 2018, shows that Brazil records an assault on a woman every four minutes. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the homicide rate for women in Brazil is the fifth highest in the world. Every seven hours, a woman is killed simply because she is a woman, according to research by Monitor da Violência, a partnership between G1, the Center for Violence Studies at USP, and the Brazilian Public Security Forum. Meanwhile, the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), in a survey published last year, indicates that women earn, on average, 20,5% less than men across all occupations. Statistics show that, on International Women's Day, there isn't much to celebrate. The numbers on wage inequality, femicide, domestic violence, and the growing reports of sexual harassment are disturbing and demand action. With the appreciation, respect, and protection of women in mind, Flamengo is promoting a series of activities for the weekend in which we commemorate the date.

Exclusive space for welcoming women at Maracanã

Starting with the game against Botafogo, this Saturday (7), women who feel harassed, violated or abused in any way at the stadium will have an exclusive space for support, with a social worker. The woman who is inside the stadium and wants to be assisted must look for a police officer, a firefighter or a security guard, who will accompany her to the location.

Game uniforms: highlighted names and number for reporting

The Sacred Mantle used by Flamengo athletes in the match against Botafogo will have the words “Ligue 180" on the sleeve, the number for the Women's Assistance Center, a free service that receives reports through toll-free and confidential calls. This service is currently offered by the National Human Rights Ombudsman's Office and is essential for combating violence against women nationally and internationally. The line operates 24 hours a day, 16 days a week, in Brazil and XNUMX other countries: Argentina, Belgium, Spain, USA, France, French Guiana, Netherlands, England, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Paraguay, Portugal, Switzerland, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

On the back of the shirt, instead of the athletes' names, the uniforms will have "husband of...", or "son of...", etc. The athletes chose women who, despite being as admirable as them, are often reduced to "player's wife" or "athlete's mother", for example, to be highlighted on the Mantle.
