Aiming to launch pioneering projects that help prevent accidents, improve the work environment and promote sustainability, Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, on the recommendation of its CEO, Reinaldo Belotti, hired engineer Durval Vilar Junior last week to implement SMS at the club. 

"SMS is an integrated health, safety, and environmental management system that will be implemented across all areas of Flamengo's operations, whether at its headquarters in Gávea or at the Ninho do Urubu training center. The project involves professionals in this area, as well as employees, athletes, and professionals," said Durval, who worked in risk management and accident investigation/analysis for two years at Metrô Rio and for 29 years at Petrobras.

With experience in civil engineering and specialization in occupational safety and ergonomics (the scientific study of the relationship between humans and machines, aiming for optimal safety and efficiency in the way they interact), Durval, 59, also has a master's degree in safety management.

He explains that the project has already begun with a mapping of all facilities and documentation, and will continue with the necessary adjustments and training of the entire team. Measures such as the use of solar energy, selective waste collection, rainwater harvesting, among others, are being analyzed and planned. 

Durval recalls that he put retirement aside to accept the challenge of working for his favorite club: "I got a call from a friend and he asked me what I was doing. I told him I'd been retired for two years, doing consulting work and working on some construction projects. When he explained that the invitation would be to work and help Flamengo, I accepted immediately, as long as my profile and experience could contribute to my club," he stated.
