Flamengo, through its Social Responsibility department, distributed hundreds of basic food baskets in various regions of Rio de Janeiro, aiming to make Christmas more dignified for people in vulnerable situations. The donations were made in the communities of São Gonçalo, Mineira, Vila Aliança, Ladeira dos Tabajaras, Rocinha, Salgueiro, Morro São João, Cantagalo, Lapa, and Morro no Banco. In total, five tons of food were delivered.

Much of this food was also donated to the elderly assisted by the CRAS (Zumbi Social Assistance Reference Center) Coexistence Service, organizations with which Mais Querido has maintained contact throughout the year, through social projects and initiatives.

Nathalia Mendes, director of the Recomeçar Association, spoke about Flamengo's initiative to help vulnerable people.

"The partnership with the CRF allows us to impact more lives in the favelas. Some of this food will be used to make 275 basic food baskets, which will be delivered to Vila Sapé, and some will be used in kits we distribute to homeless people," he said.

Worsened by the novel coronavirus pandemic, food insecurity currently affects 19 million people in Brazil. Besides being harmful to health, the effects of hunger represent a serious social problem with often irreversible repercussions, especially for children. The baskets distributed in the communities consisted of foods such as lentils, cornmeal, rice, white beans, cereals, and cookies.
