Thirty years ago, in 30, the first Women's World Cup took place. To celebrate this historic milestone for women in the sport, adidas and Flamengo present a special jersey that reaffirms all the achievements of women's football. The launch also recalls the strength and determination of women who have helped and continue to help expand and pave the way in the sport, breaking down stigmas and prejudices in football.
The Mantle conveys this strength through a detail that unites the three jerseys: a special badge bearing the number 30 and a woman on the field with the ball at her feet, demonstrating all her power. The jersey also features, of course, each team's crest on the left chest.
A story of resistance
Honoring this date means giving due recognition and visibility to the history of women's soccer in Brazil and around the world. Here, the sport won the hearts and feet of women who played in peripheral areas hidden from major urban centers, but in 1941 it was banned by federal decree. Resistance took place through clandestine training sessions and matches until the sport's full legalization almost 40 years later, in 1979.
A first experimental tournament brought together teams from 12 countries in 1988, with the Brazilian team taking the field wearing the leftover clothing from the men's teams. Then, in 1991, the first World Cup finally took place. Since then, women's soccer has broken down taboos and prejudices, developed role models like Roseli, Elane Peixinho, Marcia, Formiga, Cristiane, among others, and gained more structure. To this day, the sport faces setbacks common to all women—both in their personal and professional lives.
Machismo in the soccer world still seems to be the main obstacle to equalizing women's football. Regardless of the quality of women's teams and their efforts to open up more avenues and opportunities for the greatness of their sport, equity and recognition are still lacking. That's why celebrating these three decades is to further strengthen this fight and their visibility on the field for the decades to come.
