The artist's trajectory in the world of sport
With the know-how of iconic creations related to soccer and sports in general, Gilson already had a point of sale at Maracanã, was invited by the Federal Government to be a representative of Marca Brasil at the Louvre Museum at the 1998 World Cup, was called by the Deutsche Bank art gallery to exhibit his creations with the national flag, was chosen by several companies to create gifts for important personalities at the 2014 World Cup, such as the soccer ball-shaped bag, used by then German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the final, at Maracanã, in addition to having been invited by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to create the bag that would be given as a gift to all the first ladies of the participating countries.
Trademark
Gilson Martins stands out for his use of unconventional materials. The artist introduced the idea of using plastic in high-quality design products. New uses were proposed for raw materials used in other industrial sectors: decorative and furniture fabrics, flooring and automotive materials, synthetic materials for soccer balls, and footwear fabrics are some of the materials that surprise the public.
The acclaimed designer and visual artist is a leading figure in Brazil's creative industry, particularly in Rio de Janeiro, the city where he was born. Gilson Martins embodies Rio de Janeiro's culture in his creations, with images of Sugarloaf Mountain, Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana sidewalks, and the Lapa Arches. The artist's stores and outlets are a hit with tourists and a benchmark for Brazilian design, boasting irreverent flair and quality.
Internationalization
Many of Gilson Martins's creations don't just parade down Brazilian streets, but also grace major cities in North America, Europe, and Asia, where authentic expressions of Brazilianness are objects of desire and consumption. Over the past 15 years, he has had notable exhibitions at the Louvre Museum, Galeries Lafayette, and the Cannes Film Festival in France; at Deutsche Bank Berlin in Germany; at Milan Design Week in Italy; at the "Plasticidades" exhibition at Malba (Latin American Museum of Buenos Aires) in Argentina; and at the MoMA store in the United States. Today, one of Gilson's main audiences is in Japan, particularly Tokyo, where his pieces are a fashion trend for Japanese people who love design and the Rio lifestyle.
