Mequinho, Brazilian chess idol who represented Mengão, turns 70

By Flamengo Communication* - inHenrique Costa Mecking, known as Mequinho, turns 70 today. Mequinho is a Brazilian chess grandmaster who made history representing Flamengo. Mequinho was a player for Mais Querido in the 70s and on January 13, 1972, 50 years ago, he received the title of Grandmaster of Chess. He was the first Brazilian to receive this title.
The nation celebrated Mequinho upon his arrival at Galeão Airport on January 18th. A banner from the fans read: "Flamengo salutes its Great Master." Mequinho paraded in an open-top car to Gávea.
He was also honored at the Maracanã Stadium during the Flamengo vs. Vasco International Summer Tournament match. Congratulations, Mequinho!
