Official Note - Broadcast Rights for the 2023 Carioca Championship
By Flamengo Regatta Club - inRegarding the official notes published by two sister clubs regarding the broadcasting rights for the Campeonato Carioca, Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, while defending that any financial negotiation should be treated as something particular to each club, comes to the public to make its position on the aforementioned issue clear.
Flamengo, thanks to the work carried out in recent years, has made significant investments in its Football Department, aiming to make the team more competitive and offer a better spectacle, not only to its millions of fans but also to all football lovers. These investments are funded exclusively by the Club's financial capacity, with no revenue from outside investors. Therefore, the club must remunerate itself adequately and in line with the revenue potential it generates for its commercial partners.
It is public knowledge that the sports market pays clubs for their broadcasting rights in proportion to their commercial potential, and there is no reason to justify a different distribution at the state level.
For a better understanding of the values offered to Flamengo for image rights in the Campeonato Carioca, here are some data that, in themselves, clarify what is happening.
FANS - Flamengo fans, according to a recently published survey, represent 21,8% of the Brazilian population. The other three major Rio de Janeiro teams (Vasco, Botafogo, and Fluminense) combined represent 6,6%. This gives Flamengo a 76% share of the total fan base when we compare the four major Rio clubs.
PAY-PER-VIEW - Flamengo's share has always represented 20% of the national market and 60% of the Rio de Janeiro market. Over the past two years, a contract signed directly by Rio de Janeiro clubs with pay-TV distributors has revealed an even more significant number: 63% of the total for Flamengo, with 37% remaining for Botafogo, Fluminense, and Vasco.
SOCIAL MEDIA - Flamengo's social media following now exceeds 50 million, compared to just over 20 million for the other three major Rio clubs combined. This represents a 70% share of the total.
The percentages presented above demonstrate the enormous revenue-generating potential for the media companies negotiating with Brax, the company hired to manage the championship's commercial planning. These figures are being taken into account when Brax makes the commercial proposal for the Campeonato Carioca.
Although we have all the commercial potential percentages above 60%, Flamengo's board, in an inclusive manner and with the concern of providing better financial conditions to all clubs participating in the Campeonato Carioca, accepted the proposal made by Brax and will be receiving an amount corresponding to 42% of the amount designated by the company as the minimum payment to the four major clubs.
It is worth noting that this value proposed and accepted by the Club's board will still have its acceptance subject to final approval by Flamengo's Deliberative Council.
Flamengo's board is fully aware of the club's importance to Brazilian football. Therefore, it works to ensure that the entire football ecosystem develops fairly and harmoniously, supporting initiatives that strengthen all Brazilian clubs, but always considering the differences and commercial potential of each club.
