The National Congress will continue, this Tuesday (28.05.24), with the analysis of the Partial Veto of the General Sports Law, enacted in June 2023. 

There are still 344 items to be voted on, after 50 vetoes were rejected and only 3 were maintained.

It is crucial that Congress maintain a specific veto related to FAAP (Federation of Professional Athletes' Associations). FAAP is a private entity that received large sums of money from athlete transfers and player salaries, without ever accounting for how these funds were used. The entity charges 1% of all athlete transfers and 0,5% of all salaries, supposedly to help athletes, but there is no evidence that this assistance actually occurred.

FAAP's lack of transparency corrupts the spirit of sport, which should be a symbol of equality and merit. 

The Presidency of the Republic, based on consultation with the Ministry of Sports, justified the veto by stating that the law should not allocate resources to a private entity without a clear reason. The State has already committed to supporting athletes' career transitions, eliminating the need for transfers to FAAP.

We urge Congress to uphold the veto on FAAP's reinstatement in the General Sports Law. We need a transparent and effective mechanism to support athletes, without benefiting private entities with dubious intentions that have never been accountable to society.
