With four athletes from Flamengo - Giovana Stephan, Maria Clara Lobo, Lorena Molinos and Jéssica Noutel - the Brazilian synchronized swimming team won its first gold medal at the South American Championships on Thursday night (October 09.10). With 83.9667 points in the Combined Free Routine, the girls secured first place, followed by the Argentine hosts and Colombia. On Friday morning (October 10.10), Maria Clara, just 16, was crowned South American synchronized swimming champion in the free routine, earning Brazil its second gold medal. The competition, held at the Aquatic Park in Mar del Plata, is a qualifier for the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada. There are three spots available for teams and five for duets.
"I entered with a lot of determination, I gave my all and I'm very happy with this gold medal. On the technical floor I made some mistakes and today I was able to concentrate better. I'm very happy! The girls encouraged me a lot and that gives me much more strength," said Maria Clara.
The team's coach also praised the girls, who performed in a combo set to the theme "Sallon" and excited the crowd with the can-can music. "Opening the competition is always very difficult, but today they performed like never before and I'm to be congratulated! With great determination and desire, the athletes performed incredibly well. With more than ten South American competitions under their belts, this was undoubtedly the time I was most moved, because they surpassed themselves in every way. I think the team understands that they will be Brazil's Olympic team, and with this focus and team spirit today, they will be able to improve even further," analyzed Magali Cremona.
The combined free routine is an event that combines the other disciplines within its choreography, meaning the athletes perform in a team, duet, and solo routine. The combination is not part of the Olympic or Pan American programs, but will be contested at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships in Kazan, Russia.
