Year after year, Flamengo boasts a strong presence on the Brazilian artistic swimming team. In 2019, the "Mais Querido" (Flamengo) team pre-selected ten athletes to compete in the World Championships and the Pan American Games, under the leadership of Flamengo coach Roberta Perillier.
Speaking to the Official Website, the Flamengo and National Team coach spoke about the Brazilian team's preparation for the two most important competitions of the year.
"We've been training with the Brazilian team since January. It's very likely that, after our participation in the World Championships, we'll go straight to Lima to compete in the Pan American Games. We don't yet have the group defined for the two competitions, but we're training with 13 athletes, from which we'll select ten to participate in the World Championships and nine for the Pan American Games. Additionally, at the World Championships, we'll have the Mixed Duet, an event not contested at the Pan American Games. So, Renan Alcântara and Giovana Stephan are the only Flamengo players guaranteed to participate in the tournament so far," noted Beta Perillier.
The Mais Querido athletes competing for spots in the World and Pan American Championships are: Giovana Stephan, Lorena Molinos, Maria Clara Lobo, Gabriela Regly, Laura Miccuci, Maria Eduarda Miccuci, Jullia Catharino, Vitória Cazali, and Rebecca Rodrigues. In addition to them, Renan Alcântara will represent Mais Querido in the men's category.
The 2019 World Aquatics Championships will be held from July 12 to 28 in Gwangju, South Korea, while the Pan American Games in Lima are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11 in Peru.
The artistic swimming teams of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo rely on resources from their sponsors – Banco Bonsucesso, Furnas, Estácio, LafargeHolcim/Cimento Mauá, EY – via the Federal Incentive Law/Ministry of Sports (IR), in addition to support from the Brazilian Confederation of Clubs (CBC) resulting from the decentralization of resources originating from the Pelé Law.
