The colossal and multi-sport Clube de Regatas do Flamengo continues to make history in the pools as well. The men's and women's teams of the Sacred Hat won the National Water Polo League last Sunday (7), in Laranjeiras. For the first time in 130 years of history, Mengão was crowned Brazilian champion in both categories in the same season. 

In the men's competition, the Flamengo team defeated Fluminense 14-12 in the final to lift the trophy. In the women's competition, our girls defeated Pinheiros 15-10 to also win the national title. 

Marcus Vinicius Freire, Director of Olympic Sports at Flamengo, spoke about the investment the club made in water polo and the positive results in the very first season.

“We invested in one of the best water polo coaches in the world, Salvador Gomez, Chava, a Spanish Olympic champion and Olympic silver medalist. In six months, he revolutionized water polo at Flamengo. For the first time in history, we are Brazilian men's and women's champions, something we hadn't achieved since 2018,” stated Marcos Vinicius, who continued. 

"So, really, in six months he changes everything, he professionalizes the team. The team used to train only once a day, now they train twice, they do very different training sessions. Professionalism has arrived in Flamengo's water polo, Chava participated in two Olympics as coach of China, in Tokyo and Paris."

It's worth highlighting that Flamengo has won all the Rio de Janeiro state championships in the club's ten Olympic sports, and more than 70% of the Brazilian championships so far. In basketball, the Pride of the Nation leads the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB), and in volleyball, Bernardinho's team is undefeated and one of the leaders of the Women's Superliga.
