A sprint for the ages! Isaquias Queiroz soared through the waters of the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium to win silver in Olympic Canoeing's most prestigious event, the C1 1000m. The Bahian athlete finished fifth at the 750m mark, but at that moment, with the strength of a hero, he set an incredible pace and overtook three opponents on his way to second place overall.

With this monumental achievement under his belt, Isaquias has reached significant milestones: with five Olympic medals (three in Rio, one in Tokyo, and one in Paris), the canoeist ties Robert Scheidt and Torben Grael as the most medalists among men in Brazil's history at the world's biggest competition; overall, Rebeca Andrade, also of Flamengo, leads the way. Isaquias also becomes one of the only Brazilian athletes to medal in three different Olympic Games.

Overcome with emotion, Isaquias Queiroz spoke to the audience.

"It's a feeling of relief, a lot of happiness. It hasn't been an easy year for me. This medal, for me, is like being an Olympic champion (...) I was way behind. I remembered that Sebastian (son) asked for the gold. The gold didn't come, but I'm happy to stand on the podium and give this medal to him, whose birthday is in August, and to my whole family. To come here and win silver, to be Brazil's flag bearer, to represent my Bahia, my Brazil, thank you to everyone who believed in me," said the canoeist in an interview with Rede Globo.
