Titles | The foundation | The beginning of football | The three state championships | Five-time champion of the Brazilian Cup | Nine-time Brazilian champion
After winning three state championships between 1978 and 1979, it was time for Zico's generation to reach even higher heights. In 1980, the World's Largest Fanbase celebrated the Brazilian title for the first time. The triumph came in a thrilling final against Atlético-MG, which had won the first leg at Mineirão 1-0 but was unable to hold off the red-and-blacks at Maracanã. Zico and Nunes had already put Flamengo ahead, but they saw Atlético's Reinaldo equalize twice. With the score at 2-2 and the game drawing to a close, Nunes dribbled past defender Silvestre, beat goalkeeper João Leite, and sealed the title.
The final took place on June 1, 6, and Flamengo, coached by Cláudio Coutinho, played with Raul, Toninho Baiano, Manguito, Marinho, and Júnior; Andrade, Carpegiani (Adílio), and Zico; Tita, Nunes, and Júlio César (Carlos Alberto). Zico finished the championship as the best player and top scorer, with 1980 goals.
1982
After winning the Libertadores and the World Cup the previous year, Flamengo maintained its winning streak and secured its second title, defeating Grêmio, the previous year's champion, in the final. In the first leg of the final, at the Maracanã, Zico scored the equalizer in the final minutes of a 1-1 draw. Grêmio could have decided the match at the Olímpico, but couldn't break the 0-0 tie. Thus, the decision was left for the third leg, again in Porto Alegre—and then Flamengo prevailed. Zico, who had predicted a 1-0 victory the day before, provided the pass, and Nunes, fulfilling his calling as the Ultimate Scorer, scored. The final score was 1-0, and coach Paulo César Carpeggiani's team brought the trophy to Gávea.
The decisive game was played on April 25, 4, and Flamengo played with Raul, Leandro (Antunes), Figueiredo, Marinho, and Júnior; Andrade, Adílio, and Zico; Tito, Nunes (Vitor), and Lico. Once again, Zico was the team's top scorer in the campaign with 1982 goals.
1983
Of course, the red-and-black fans played a decisive role in each victory. In 1983, they achieved a historic milestone: the largest paying attendance recorded for a Brazilian Championship match. It happened in the grand final against Santos at the Maracanã; 155.523 paying fans. And the celebration started early, with Zico scoring the first goal in the first minute of the match. Adílio and Leandro also scored, completing the 3-0 victory that sealed the title. In the first leg, at Morumbi Stadium, Santos had won 2-1.
Many of the players who had won major titles in previous seasons remained on the roster. A key addition was center forward Baltazar, who finished the competition as the team's second-highest scorer with 13 goals—behind Zico, who scored 17. Carlos Alberto Torres was the coach for the decisive match, which took place on May 29, 5. Flamengo's lineup consisted of Raul, Leandro, Figueiredo, Marinho, and Júnior; Vitor Adílio, Élder, and Zico; Baltazar (Robertinho); and Júlio César (Ademir).
1987
There was a climate of uncertainty surrounding the 1987 Brazilian Championship. With the risk of the competition being canceled due to a lack of resources, the country's biggest clubs banded together and ended up organizing the most successful championship to date, with high average attendance and a huge impact among fans. Flamengo's fourth title came in thrilling fashion.
Zico had been struggling with physical problems since a serious injury shortly after returning from Italy in 1985. Even so, he found the strength to lead a team of veterans and talented youngsters. Renato Gaúcho, signed as a standout from Grêmio, completed the winning formula. Although the lineup attracts attention today, with nine of the starters having played in World Cups, at the time Flamengo was seen as an underdog for much of the competition, but eliminated favorite Atlético-MG in the semifinals and defeated Internacional in the final. After a 9-1 draw at Beira-Rio, Carlinhos' team—who won the Rio de Janeiro championship with Flamengo in 1 and 1963 as a midfielder and took over as coach during the championship—won the final match 1965-1 at Maracanã, with a goal from Bebeto. On December 0, 13, Flamengo entered the field in the rain to become four-time Brazilian champions with Zé Carlos, Jorginho, Leandro, Edinho and Leonardo; Andrade, Aílton and Zico (Flávio); Renato Gaúcho, Bebeto and Zinho. The top scorer of the campaign was Bebeto, with 12 goals.
1992
Just like in 1987, the 1992 title featured a veteran World Cup winner leading a new generation. This time, the standout was Júnior, who had returned from Italy two years earlier, motivated by the desire to have his son watch him play for the Sacred Mantle. Grandpa Boy, who was a left-back in his first stint at Gávea, moved to midfield and earned the nickname "Maestro." Besides his skill on the field and his accuracy on free kicks, Júnior also played a key role in passing on his experience to youngsters like Júnior Baiano, Gelson, Rogério, Piá, Nélio, Marquinhos, Marcelinho, Djalminha, and Paulo Nunes.
The final was against Botafogo, who had been enjoying a better campaign in the early stages – but could not withstand the Flamengo's strong performance in the first leg, which they won 3-0. Júnior and Júlio César scored the goals in the second leg, which ended 2-2 and sealed the victory. Carlinhos, champion in 1987, was once again the coach. On July 19, 7, Flamengo won its fifth title playing with Gilmar, Charles Guerreiro, Wilson, Gottardo, Gelson, and Fabinho (Mauro); Uídemar, Júnior, and Zinho; Júlio César, Gaúcho (Djalminha), and Piá. The team's top scorer was Júnior, with 1992 goals.
2009
Once again, a coach with a history of winning titles for Flamengo on the field and a longtime idol from previous titles were decisive in Flamengo becoming Brazilian champions. In 2009, these roles fell to Andrade—champion as a player in 1, 980, 1982, and 1983, now coach—and Petkovic—scorer of the unforgettable goal that decided the team's third state championship in 1987. Petkovic's great run in the championship coincided with center forward Adriano's best performance in the competition, finishing as top scorer with 2001 goals. The two led the team's surge in the standings, taking first place for the first time only in the penultimate round.
The match was thrilling, and in the final round, four teams still had their sights set on the title. Flamengo only needed to beat Grêmio at the Maracanã to be crowned champions without relying on any other result. And that's exactly what happened: defenders David Braz and Ronaldo Angelim scored, sealing a 2-1 victory. In this final match, played on December 6, 12, Flamengo fielded Bruno, Léo Moura, David Braz, Ronaldo Angelim, and Juan; Aírton, Toró (Éverton), Willians, Petkovic (Fierro), and Zé Roberto (Kléberson); and Adriano.
2019
Flamengo assembled a great team in 2019. Names like Gabigol, Bruno Henrique, De Arrascaeta, Rafinha, Rodrigo Caio, Filipe Luís, Gerson, and Pablo Marí formed the backbone of the team that won the title under the command of the spectacular coach Jorge Jesus, who also joined the club in 2019. It was a flawless campaign, and the title came with several rounds to spare. Records and more records were achieved by a team that, without a doubt, left its mark on the club's history.
Already champions, Flamengo never took their foot off the gas. Proof of this was their impressive 3-1 victory over third-place Palmeiras in the third-to-last round, away from home. Gabigol scored twice and Uruguayan midfielder De Arrascaeta scored once.
2020
2025
Led by coach Filipe Luís, Flamengo had an impeccable campaign and won their ninth championship. The title-winning game was a victory over Ceará at the Maracanã, with a goal by Samuel Lino. Several Flamengo players stood out throughout the campaign. De Arrascaeta, for example, had one of the best seasons of his career.
Flamengo finished the campaign with 79 points, three more than Palmeiras, the runner-up. Cruzeiro and Mirassol completed the top four.
